China's University Blockchain Awareness Survey: Only 8% of Students Hold Crypto Assets
Survey on University Students' Understanding of Blockchain: Level of Understanding Needs Improvement
Blockchain, as an emerging technology, is gradually penetrating various fields. So, what is the current level of awareness of blockchain among university students? Recently, a survey conducted across national universities revealed some interesting phenomena.
Surveys show that college students' understanding of Blockchain is still not clear enough. 23.4% of respondents stated that they "know nothing" about Blockchain, and nearly 30% said they "do not understand it well." In terms of cryptocurrency, only 4.2% of people said they are "very familiar," while 29% said they "know nothing at all." 67% of people are aware of Bitcoin, 31.6% know about Ethereum, but awareness of other tokens is relatively low.
The understanding of blockchain-related terminology is also not high. Among the 11 listed blockchain-related terms, only 7 people indicated that they fully understand them, and only 15 respondents are familiar with more than 8 terms. In the field of blockchain applications, 77.2% of people know about the application of blockchain in the financial and securities industry, but have less understanding of its applications in fashion, humanities, and arts.
The survey also found that students' awareness and interest in Blockchain are closely related to their academic backgrounds. Students majoring in economics, management, and engineering have a better understanding of Blockchain and show more interest in it. In contrast, students from humanities and social sciences, agriculture, and medicine have a lower understanding and interest in Blockchain. Graduate students have a better understanding of Blockchain than undergraduate students.
In terms of cryptocurrency investment, 8% of respondents indicated that they are holding cryptocurrencies, while 9% have purchased them in the past but have exited. Among them, nearly 40% entered the market between 2017 and 2018, mainly concentrated in economics majors.
The media is the primary channel for students to obtain information about Blockchain, with 36% of students first encountering the term "Blockchain" through mass media. However, media coverage has a limited impact on students' understanding of Blockchain, with nearly 40% of students stating that media reports "have an impact, but the impact is minimal."
In terms of future career choices, 26.7% of students indicated that they might pursue jobs related to Blockchain. This reflects the optimistic attitude of some students towards the prospects of the Blockchain industry.
Currently, blockchain education in universities is still in its infancy. Surveys show that among the 131 universities involved, only 8 have offered blockchain-related courses. In addition to official courses, student-organized blockchain clubs and associations are also playing an important role, such as the Tsinghua University Student Blockchain Association and the Sun Yat-sen University Blockchain Club.
Overall, students in Chinese universities have a basic understanding of Blockchain. Apart from related majors such as economics and computer science, most students have limited knowledge of this cutting-edge technology. Although the media is the primary source of information, students maintain a cautious attitude towards media reports. Blockchain education in universities is just beginning, but it will take time to move from specialized knowledge to widespread general education. As Blockchain technology continues to develop and its application scope expands, enhancing university students' understanding and comprehension of Blockchain will become increasingly important.
