Portugal abandons purchase of American F-35 fighter jets, citing concerns about the unpredictability of the Trump administration.
On March 14th, Jinshi Data News, according to Politico, due to concerns about the Trump administration, Portugal ruled out the possibility of buying more modern American-made F-35s to replace F-16 fighters, which is one of the first examples leading to a potential collapse of American arms deals. Portugal's bearish traders had suggested buying F-35 fighters, however, when asked by the media, outgoing Defense Minister Nuno Melo said, "We cannot ignore the geopolitical environment when making choices. The recent U.S. position, against the backdrop of NATO... must make us consider the best options, as the predictability of our allies is a significant asset to consider." The dramatic adjustments led by Trump have raised concerns that the U.S. government may decide to prevent buyers from obtaining the software updates and spare parts necessary for the full operation of the F-35. "The world has changed... and our allies... may restrict the use, maintenance, components, and everything related to ensuring the operation and use of the aircraft in all circumstances," Melo said.
